Electric Car Charger Installation

Electric cars require regular charging. For most EV owners, charging will usually be done at home using an electric home car charger. The rest of the time, you will be utilising somebody else’s power or ‘refuelling’ at a public charging station.

Using a domestic power socket to charge your electric vehicle is fine. However, manufacturers generally recommend to not use home sockets for daily charging, as constant power socket charging can cause overheating and burning.

Professional electric car charger home installation is a better option when you are going to be charging every day. This is because it’s safer and lowers costs while reducing the time that it takes to charge your electric vehicle.

How do I get a charger for my electric car? It’s simple. Have qualified electricians like Intuitive Energy fit it for you at your home or place of business. It can be fitted to an outside wall quickly and with ease, in most cases.

Below, we answer a few common electric vehicle charger questions for your convenience.

Are all electric car chargers the same?

No, not all EV car chargers are the same. There are different types of recharging ports and plugs. These plugs and ports have multiple pins for transferring and managing electrical flow. Some electrics have multiple options of connection type.

The three main adaptors are the Type 1 (J1772), Type 2 (Mennekes) and CHAdeMO plug, a fast charger connection. CCS (Combined Charging System) is another fast connection. It enables AC/DC charging with Type 1 or 2 configurations.

At Australian public charging stations, CCS has become the default EV connection, while electric vehicles in Oz generally come standard with the Type 2 plug. Both Tesla and Volvo EVs can charge at Type 2 charging stations.

What are electric car charger power requirements?

Electric vehicles, which work with AC and DC power supplies at varying output levels, offer versatile charging. You can charge them up at home or at any number of compatible public fast charging stations throughout Australia.

A standard 240V AC socket can supply 2.4kW of power or more at home, with faster charging possible with a dedicated wall box installation. On the road, 350kW of DC power can be supplied by public chargers if your vehicle is compatible.

There are various electric charging plugs and standards accommodating alternate current and direct current charging. Some electric ports combine AC charging plugs with a DC charging option for fast public charging.

How much does it cost for an electric car charger?

How much an electric home car charger costs you will depend on a number of factors. These include what vehicle you have, the size of your EV battery and the level of charger you need. There are also charger installation costs.

There are three EV charger speed levels. Level 1 chargers allow you to “trickle” charge at 2kW per hour. Wall-mounted Level 2 chargers deliver 7kW or 22kW per hour. Level 3 chargers are high-voltage DC chargers (50kW to 350kW per hour).
